The Minecraft 1.19 update has officially been released for all platforms and has been warmly welcomed by the community. In order to meet all the players’ demands, Minecraft 1.19 introduces a new host of creatures along with a new mob and cross-platform parity between Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. However, the most significant addition in this update is the Allay, the winner of the Minecraft mob fan vote in 2021.

The Allay is a cute new mob that acts as a companion and collects items for players. Not only that, but it also brings updates to existing gameplay mechanics, including music, name tags, and more. However, if you haven’t been closely following Minecraft releases, you might find it challenging to keep up with all of Allay’s features. So, we’re here to provide you with everything you need to know about Allay in Minecraft 1.19, how it works, where to find it, and what not to do with Allay. Let’s get started right away.

What is Allay?

The Allay is similar in size to Minecraft bees but can fly at much greater heights. Unlike existing mobs, the Allay is not associated with any specific Minecraft faction or group. Furthermore, it does not interact with any other mobs in the game apart from players. Even hostile mobs like zombies or creepers do not pay any attention to the presence of the Allay.

How to find Allay?

To find Allay in Minecraft 1.19, you can encounter them naturally in the following locations:

  1. Imitation Strongholds
  2. Woodland Mansions

In Creative mode, you can encounter Allay by using spawn eggs. However, we recommend reading our article on how to find and use Allay in Minecraft 1.19 for more details.

Imitation Strongholds

Similar to Iron Golems, Allay appears within wooden cages created around fake strongholds. Each compartment can contain up to three Allay at a time. You need to break the wooden structure to help the Allay escape. Once freed, Allay will start wandering until they find dropped items.

But before rushing in to rescue Allay, make sure to avoid or defeat the pillagers. Each imitation stronghold can have dozens of hostile pillagers alongside villagers and players. Without the most skilled Minecraft enchanters, they can overpower and kill you in minutes.

Woodland Mansions

Mansions are one of the most dangerous structures in the game. They are the homes of hostile mobs including zombies, creepers, evokers, vindicators, pillagers, and more. But with such high loot potential, the treasure within these mansions is impressive. It has several hidden and open rooms spread across three floors, each with unique features.

The mansion has a large cage room, usually on the first floor. It contains four cages made of cobblestone with three Allay trapped in each. You can use a lever outside the cage to open it and free the Allay. So, from one mansion, you can potentially get 12 Allay at once.

What Allay Does in Minecraft

The only function of Allay in Minecraft is item collection. It selects a specific item and searches for copies of it in all loaded chunks. Allay can collect items in the following cases:

  1. If Allay detects a dropped item nearby, it will pick up that item. Then Allay returns the item to the nearest player and begins searching for copies of it.
  2. Besides picking up dropped items, Allay can also accept items from players. It holds onto the original item for itself and still searches for copies of it but continues to give it back to the player.
  3. Finally, it also picks up randomly dropped items and tries to return them to their owners.

Allay and Note Blocks

Note Blocks are wooden blocks in Minecraft that play music in the game. Everything in Minecraft is attracted to these Note Blocks. If Allay hears music playing from a Note Block, it will drop all the items it has collected next to the Note Block instead of searching for duplicates.

However, this doesn’t always work. Allay considers a specific Note Block its favorite for 30 seconds while it plays music. After this time, it will ignore similar Note Blocks until the music plays again. You can set up Redstone Machines to play music continuously for an extended period.

Also, remember that wool blocks block sound from Note Blocks. So, if there’s a wool block between the Note Block and Allay, it might not hear it. On the other hand, this gaming feature can be useful when dealing with groups of Allays.

Using Allay

Now that you understand how it works, using Allay is quite straightforward. Here are some of our ideas:

  • Allay can make fully automated and much faster item collection systems on farms without using complex Redstone mechanisms. For more information, read our article on using Allay in automatic Minecraft farms.
  • You can also create automatic sorting systems to collect similar items in the same area or chest.
  • A group of Allays can help you quickly collect items after explosions and mob kills.
  • Since Allay can store up to 64 copies of stackable items simultaneously, you can also use it as a mobile storage unit.
  • You can use Allay to find lost or accidentally dropped items within loaded chunks. But you must have a duplicate of the item.

Key Traits of Allay Mob

  • Health and Regeneration: Like most peaceful mobs, Allay doesn’t have much health. You can kill it with two diamond sword hits or four hits from an iron sword. It also dies from suffocation in blocks, being underwater for an extended period, and from fire. However, Allay cannot take any damage from falling, as it constantly levitates regardless of height. It has 20 health points in both Java and Bedrock editions. For health regeneration, Allay regenerates 2 health every second. So, if you don’t attack it with highly enchanted swords, Allay can survive a few random hits.

  • No Attack: Allay in Minecraft does not have an attack mechanism. It only runs away when attacked. However, remember that Allay is immune to the attacks of its owner. This means that if it is holding an item it received from you, your attacks won’t affect Allay. However, if you reclaim the item technically, you can easily kill Allay. Additionally, most hostile mobs ignore Allay. So, you don’t have to worry about protecting it unless you’re near an Enderman or an Iron Golem. Among these, the Wither targets Allay by default, but the Guardian only harms it when annoyed by Allay’s presence.
  • Interaction with Crowds: Currently, Allay’s presence does not bother any other mobs. No hostile crowd attacks it. The only mob that attacks Allay in Minecraft is the Wither, which typically tries to kill all mobs in the area. So, the cute magical mob is no exception.
  • Gentle Emission of Light: Due to its unique color, Allay stands out in most creature crowds during the day. However, it’s even easier to spot them at night. Each Allay emits minimal light, not enough to illuminate the surrounding area but enough to make it glow. The light level is similar to distant torches or spider eyes in the dark. If you’re just exploring some Minecraft house ideas, Allay can serve as a unique and beautiful light source. Just make sure they don’t accidentally start stealing your building materials.
  • Collect and Stack Items: If an item can be stacked with an item already in your inventory, it can also be stacked with items carried by Allay. This is still true for many types of items, including diamonds, building blocks, etc. But if there’s an item in Allay’s inventory that can’t be stacked, like armor, it will drop next to you or a Note Block before looking for the next item.

Trading Items with Allay

Giving and taking items from Allay is quite simple. If Allay is empty-handed, you can give it the item you’re holding by right-clicking or using the secondary action key on it. Then Allay will search for and collect copies of that item for you.

Similarly, if you have nothing, you can right-click or use the additional action key on Allay to take the item it’s holding. But immediately after you do this, Allay will start moving freely. You’ll need to give it another item soon, or Allay will fly away empty-handed.
