Prior to the 1.21 version of Minecraft, when a player defeats the illager captain, he will immediately gain the bad omen effect. But from version 1.21 onwards, this was changed so that defeating the illager captain will drop an ominous potion, which can then be drunk by the player to gain the bad omen effect. With this older mechanic, gaining the effect was certain upon defeating the illager captain and the player would have to be careful about entering villagers as it would trigger a raid. Classic Bad Omen Mod (1.21.3, 1.21.1) reverts these changes so that the older mechanics are still applied in the newer versions of the game.
