This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a dark oak log with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, a dark oak log is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

Let’s explore how to add a dark oak log to your inventory.

Where to find a Dark Oak Log in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find a dark oak log in the Creative Inventory menu:

Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8 – 1.19.3
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

How to get a Dark Oak Log in Survival Mode

You can add a dark oak log to your inventory in Survival mode by finding dark oak trees growing in a Dark Forest biome and then chopping down the tree trunk. So, let’s get started!

1. Find a Dark Oak Tree

First, you need to find a dark oak tree in your Minecraft world. Dark oak trees are found the Dark Forest. It is easy to spot a Dark Forest because of the large red and brown mushrooms towering through the dark oak trees.

Within the Dark Forest, you will find dark oak trees. Dark oak trees can only survive in very shady areas which is why you can only find them in these forested areas.

2. Hold an Axe

Although you can use your hand to chop down a dark oak tree, we prefer to use a tool such as an axe. These are the axes you can choose from:

How to make a Diamond Axe
How to make a Golden Axe
How to make a Iron Axe
How to make a Stone Axe
How to make a Wooden Axe
How to make a Netherite Axe

In this example, we are going to use a diamond axe because it is a faster tool to chop down a dark oak tree.

3. Chop the Tree Trunk

The game control to chop down the tree trunk of a dark oak tree depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the dark oak tree.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the dark oak tree.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the dark oak tree.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the dark oak tree.

You will need to continue to chop until a small dark oak log finally appears.

4. Pick up the Dark Oak Log

Make sure you pick up the dark oak log before it disappears.

Once you pick up the dark oak log, it will appear in your hotbar.

A dark oak log is a useful item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
