This Minecraft tutorial explains the Desert Hills biome with screenshots.

In Minecraft, you will spawn into worlds with unique weather, animals, and plants. These regions are known as biomes. Let’s explore the Desert Hills biome in Minecraft.

Background

In Minecraft, the Desert Hills is a biome in the Overworld. It is made up of lots of hills that are covered in sand, cacti, and dead bushes. You may find rivers running along the edges of this biome where there will be sugar canes growing. Starting in Minecraft 1.18, the Desert Hills is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Desert biome.

Let’s explore the characteristics of the Desert Hills biome.

The weather in the Desert Hills biome is very dry with little precipitation.

Overworld Mobs that Spawn at Night

You will still find the usual Overworld mobs that spawn at night in the Desert Hills biome, such as creepers, endermen, skeletons, spiders, witches and zombies:

Pyramids

If you look carefully in the Desert Hills biome, you will sometimes find a pyramid like the one below:

The pyramid is made out of sandstone, smooth sandstone, chiseled sandstone, and orange terracotta. Inside, you will find a pattern of colored terracotta in the center of the pyramid. Tunnel down to the bottom of the pyramid to find 4 chests filled with loot. Avoid the stone pressure plate in the center that will set off 9 blocks of TNT.

Desert Villages

Now in the Desert Hills biome, you can find a rare village like the one below:

Inside this village, you will find a group of small buildings with gardens of vegetables. Villagers naturally spawn inside of these villagers and grow gardens of potatoes, carrots, and wheat. When you are running low on food, you can harvest their vegetables for yourself. You can also trade with villagers to get rare items.
