If you are looking for a new challenge in Minecraft, you might want to explore an ancient city. These are massive structures that generate in the deep dark biome, at layer -51. They are full of loot, secrets, and dangers. In this post, I will give you some tips and tricks on how to survive and thrive in an ancient city.
An ancient city is not for the faint of heart. It is mostly dark, and the only mob that spawns there is the warden, a terrifying beast that can kill you in a few hits, even if you wear full netherite armor. However, there are also many rewards for exploring an ancient city. Here are some of them:
You can find sculk catalysts , which allow you to grow sculk blocks infinitely.
You can obtain soul-related blocks and basalt without going to the Nether.
You can get skeleton skulls without dealing with charged creepers.
You can get the Ward and Silence armor trims, which are very rare and powerful.
You can get Swift Sneak enchanted books, which let you sneak faster and quieter.
You can get echo shards , which can be used to craft a recovery compass, a useful item that can help you find your way back to your spawn point.
You can get disc fragments , which can be used to craft the “5” music disc, a mysterious and eerie record.
You can get treasure items like enchanted golden apples , “otherside” music discs, and diamond horse armor, which are more common in ancient city chests than in other structures.
You can convert the ancient city into a mob-proof base after removing all the sculk shriekers , as no other hostile mobs can spawn there.
You can mine the sculk blocks without Silk Touch for a lot of experience.
You can keep some sculk shriekers
and use them to spawn wardens, either for farming sculk catalysts or for creating a mob switch.
2. What do you need?
Before you venture into an ancient city, you need to prepare yourself well. Here are some items that you should bring with you:
2.1 Necessary equipment
A full set of netherite armor with Protection IV and Mending. This will give you some protection against the warden’s attacks and prevent your armor from breaking.
A netherite sword with Sharpness V, Looting III, Fire Aspect II, Sweeping Edge III, Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will help you deal more damage to the warden and get more loot from it.
A bow or crossbow with Power V, Punch II, Flame, Infinity or Multishot (for crossbow), Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will allow you to shoot the warden from a distance and knock it back.
A shield with Unbreaking III and Mending. This will block some of the warden’s damage and prevent it from stunning you.
A stack of arrows or fireworks (for crossbow). This will provide ammo for your ranged weapon.
A stack of golden apples or enchanted golden apples. This will heal you and give you extra effects like regeneration and absorption.
A stack of potions of healing or regeneration. This will heal you faster than food or golden apples.
A stack of potions of invisibility. This will make you invisible to the warden’s sight, but not to its hearing.
A stack of potions of night vision. This will let you see better in the dark.
A stack of potions of speed or swiftness. This will let you run faster and escape from the warden more easily.
A stack of potions of fire resistance. This will protect you from fire damage caused by your own weapon or by lava pools in the ancient city.
A stack of ender pearls. This will let you teleport around the ancient city and avoid obstacles or traps.
2.2 Optional equipment
A netherite axe with Efficiency V, Fortune III (or Silk Touch), Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will let you chop down wooden structures and collect more resources or sculk blocks.
A netherite pickaxe with Efficiency V, Fortune III (or Silk Touch), Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will let you mine stone structures and collect more resources or sculk blocks.
A netherite shovel with Efficiency V, Fortune III (or Silk Touch), Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will let you dig dirt structures and collect more resources or sculk blocks.
A netherite hoe with Efficiency V, Fortune III (or Silk Touch), Unbreaking III, and Mending. This will let you harvest wool structures and collect more resources or sculk blocks.
A stack of torches or glowstone. This will let you light up the ancient city and prevent sculk shriekers from spawning more wardens.
A stack of wool or carpet. This will let you cover the floor and prevent vibrations from being detected by the warden or the sculk shriekers.
A stack of TNT or beds. This will let you blast through walls and structures and create shortcuts or openings.
A stack of ladders or scaffolding. This will let you climb up or down structures and reach higher or lower areas.
A stack of buckets of water or milk. This will let you create water sources or remove negative effects like blindness or nausea caused by sculk shriekers.
A stack of cobwebs or honey blocks. This will let you slow down the warden or trap it in place.
A stack of snowballs or eggs. This will let you distract the warden or lure it away from you.
A jukebox and a music disc. This will let you play music and calm down the warden, making it less aggressive.
