/defaultgamemode <mode>

Definitions

  • mode is the default game mode for all new players when they join a multiplayer server. It can be one of the following:
    mode Description
    adventure
    (also the abbreviations a or 2 in Java Edition 1.12 and older)
    Adventure mode
    creative
    (also the abbreviations c or 1 in Java Edition 1.12 and older)
    Creative mode
    spectator
    (also the abbreviations sp or 3 in Java Edition 1.12 and older)

    survival
    (also the abbreviations s or 0 in Java Edition 1.12 and older)

TIP: You can no longer use the abbreviations starting in Java Edition 1.13.

To set the default game mode to Survival mode in Minecraft 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19 and 1.20:

/defaultgamemode survival

To set the default game mode to Creative mode:

/defaultgamemode creative

To set the default game mode to Spectator mode:

/defaultgamemode spectator

To set the default game mode to Adventure mode:

How to Enter the Command

1. Open the Chat Window

The easiest way to run a command in Minecraft is within the chat window. The game control to open the chat window depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the T key to open the chat window.

2. Type the Command

In this example, we will set the world’s default game mode to Survival mode in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.20 with the following command:

/defaultgamemode survival

Type the command in the chat window. As you are typing, you will see the command appear in the lower left corner of the game window. Press the Enter key to run the command.

Once the cheat has been entered, the default game mode will be set.

You will see the message “The default game mode is now Survival Mode” appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the default game mode has been set for new players entering the world.
