This Minecraft tutorial explains how to use the /tag command with step-by-step instructions.

You can add, list and remove player tags using the /tag command in Minecraft. This is a very useful command to target and tag players in a multiplayer game.

TIP: Starting in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.13, the /tag command replaces the /scoreboard players tag command to set up and manage tags for players.

Let’s explore how to use this cheat (game command).

Requirements

To run game commands in Minecraft, you have to turn cheats on in your world.

In Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac), there are different syntaxes depending on what you would like to do with the tags.

To add a tag to a player:

To list the tags for a player:

/tag <targets> list

To remove a tag from a player:

/tag <targets> remove <name>

Definitions

  • targets is the name of the player (or a target selector) that you wish to target.
  • name is the name of the tag to add or remove from the targeted players. It can not contain spaces.

Examples

Example in Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19 and 1.20

To add a tag called FoundMesaBiome to the nearest player in Minecraft 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19 and 1.20:

/tag @p add FoundMesaBiome

In Minecraft 1.12 and older, use the /scoreboard players tag to manage player tags instead of the /tags command.

Type the command in the chat window. As you are typing, you will see the command appear in the lower left corner of the game window. Press the Enter key to run the command.

Once the cheat has been entered, the new tag will be added to the player.
