This Minecraft tutorial explains the Jump Boost effect with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
Background
The Jump Boost effect is a status effect that lets you jump higher in the game.
But remember that the higher you jump, the farther you fall to the ground. So if you give yourself Jump Boost using the /effect command, you might find that you take fall damage each time after jumping.
TIP: In Java Edition, you will take fall damage after jumping with Jump Boost 16 or higher.
There are levels of Jump Boost such as Jump Boost II, Jump Boost III, Jump Boost IV and so on. The higher the level of Jump Boost, the higher you will be able to jump in the game.

Effect Command for Jump Boost
Effect Command in Minecraft Java Edition (Current)
Jump Boost:
/effect give @p jump_boost 99999
Jump Boost II:
/effect give @p jump_boost 99999 1
Jump Boost 50 (fun height to jump):
/effect give @p jump_boost 99999 49
Jump Boost 128 (highest amplifier that worked without glitching):
/effect give @p jump_boost 99999 127
To remove all status effects including Jump Boost, you can either drink milk or use the following /effect command:
/effect clear @p
Effect Command in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.11 and 1.12
Jump Boost:
/effect @p jump_boost 99999
Jump Boost II:
/effect @p jump_boost 99999 1
To remove all status effects:
/effect @p clear
TIP: Although you can go up to 255 for the amplifier for Jump Boost, Minecraft might not behave as expected so be careful. An amplifier too high and you won’t jump properly. We have successfully tried an amplifier as high as 127 which gives you Jump Boost 128. But don’t try this in Survival mode or you will find yourself jumping above the clouds and then dying when you land.
