This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a knowledge book with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

A knowledge book is an item that contains the knowledge of various crafting recipes. When the knowledge book is used by a player in Survival mode, those crafting recipes contained within the knowledge book are immediately revealed to the player. A knowledge book is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace and it is not available through the Creative Inventory menu. You can only add a knowledge book to your inventory using a game command.

Let’s explore how to add a knowledge book to your inventory.

TIP: The knowledge book can be used in conjunction with the doLimitedCrafting gamerule and the /recipe command.

Where to find a Knowledge Book in Creative Mode

A knowledge book is not available in the Creative Inventory menu. You must use a game command such as the /give command to add this item to your inventory.

Item ID and Name

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, a knowledge book has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

Description
(Minecraft ID Name)
Data Value Stack Size Version
Knowledge Book
(minecraft:knowledge_book)
0 1 1.12
Knowledge Book
(minecraft:knowledge_book)
1 1.13 – 1.19.4
  • Description is what the item is called and (Minecraft ID Name) is the string value that is used in game commands.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
  • Stack Size is the maximum stack size for this item. While some items in Minecraft are stackable up to 64, other items can only be stacked up to 16 or 1. (NOTE: These stack sizes are for vanilla Minecraft only. If you are running a mod, some mods may change the stack size for an item.)
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers that the Minecraft ID and Name are valid for.

Give Command for Knowledge Book

Give Command in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac), the /give command for Knowledge Book is:

/give @p knowledge_book 1

This command would give the nearest player an empty knowledge book with no crafting recipes. You will need to add crafting recipes to the knowledge book using the Recipes nbt tag.

Examples

To give a knowledge book that contains the crafting recipe for conduit:

/give @p knowledge_book{Recipes:[conduit]} 1

To give a knowledge book that contains the crafting recipes for conduit and beetroot soup:

/give @p knowledge_book{Recipes:[conduit,beetroot_soup]} 1

You can add as many crafting recipes as you like! And when the player uses the knowledge book in Survival mode, those crafting recipes will be unlocked and available to the player when crafting items.
