In vanilla Minecraft, the recipe for crafting chests is very simple and straightforward. You place eight wooden planks of any kind into a 3×3 crafting grid, leaving the center slot empty, and you will get one wooden chest. You can use any kind of wooden plank for this recipe, whether it be oak, acacia, spruce, dark oak… you can even use the nether fungi planks for the recipe and the end result is the same old vanilla chest. But not anymore! LieOnLion More Chests Variants Mod (1.20.2, 1.19.2) is here with a change. This mod introduces several different wooden chests into the game. They all have the same function and differ only in appearance. The appearance of a chest will now depend on the plank type that was used to craft it. If you craft a chest using dark oak planks, you will get a dark oak themed chest as a result. This works with the nether fungi planks too.
