This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a light block with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, a light block is a new item that was introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part I. Light blocks can be crafted to emit a light level between 0 and 15 and are customizable. These blocks are typically used by map makers, and once placed, they are invisible and players can walk through them just like air blocks. A light block is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace and it is not available through the Creative Inventory menu. You can only add a light block to your inventory using a game command.

Let’s explore how to add a light block to your inventory.

Where to find a Light Block in Creative Mode

A light block is not available in the Creative Inventory menu. You must use a game command such as the /give command to add this item to your inventory.

Light Levels

A light block can emit 16 different light levels, ranging from 0 to 15. A light level of 15 is the highest light level in the game and emits the most light possible. A light level of 0 is the lowest light level and emits no light.

This is what the light block looks like for each of the 16 different light levels in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition (PE, Win10, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch):

Item ID and Name

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, a light block has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

  • Description is what the item is called and (Minecraft ID Name) is the string value that is used in game commands.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
  • Stack Size is the maximum stack size for this item. While some items in Minecraft are stackable up to 64, other items can only be stacked up to 16 or 1. (NOTE: These stack sizes are for vanilla Minecraft only. If you are running a mod, some mods may change the stack size for an item.)
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers that the Minecraft ID and Name are valid for.
