How to craft a Map in Survival Mode
1. Open the Crafting Menu
First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3×3 crafting grid that looks like this:
2. Add Items to make a Map
In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make a map, place 8 papers and 1 compass on Java Edition (PC/Mac), Xbox and PS in the 3×3 crafting grid. In PE and Windows 10, you need 9 papers to make a map.
When making a map, it is important that the items are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. For PC, Xbox and PS, place 1 compass in the center box and 8 papers around it. For PE and Windows 10, place 9 papers filling all of the boxes. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a map.
Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the map will appear in the box to the right.
3. Move the Map to Inventory
Once you have crafted a map, you need to move the new item to your inventory.
Congratulations, you have made a map in Minecraft!
