This Minecraft tutorial explains the Mending enchantment with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

Background

The Mending enchantment uses xp (experience) to mend your equipped tools, weapons and armor. Each time you gain experience by killing mobs or mining certain items, the experience earned will automatically be used to repair any damaged tools, weapons or armor that you have equipped (and are enchanted with Mending).

If there is any xp (experience) left over after mending those equipped items, the extra xp will be added to your experience bar.

You can add the Mending enchantment to any pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe, fishing rod, carrot on a stick, shears, helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots, shield, elytra, sword, trident, bow, or crossbow using an enchanting table, anvil, or game command.

The maximum level for the Mending enchantment is Level 1. This means that you can only enchant an item with up to Mending I, and nothing higher for this enchantment.
