This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft smooth basalt with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
In Minecraft, smooth basalt is a new block that was introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part I. It is one of the many building blocks that you can make. This block is not made with a crafting table but rather with a furnace.
Let’s explore how to add smooth basalt to your inventory.

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft smooth basalt:
1 Basalt
How to craft Smooth Basalt in Survival Mode
1. Open the Furnace Menu
First, open your furnace so that you have the Furnace menu that looks like this:
2. Add Fuel to the Furnace
Next, you need to add fuel to the bottom fuel box in the furnace.
In this tutorial, we are going to use coal as our fuel.
TIP: Read our tutorial called How to Add Fuel to a Furnace if you aren’t sure what items can be used as fuel, the length of time each fuel will burn, or how many items each fuel can smelt/cook.
3. Add Items to make Smooth Basalt
Next, place the basalt in the top box of the furnace. You should see the flames cooking the basalt.
Once the basalt is cooked/smelted in the furnace, the smooth basalt will appear in the box to the right.
4. Move the Smooth Basalt to Inventory
Now that you have made smooth basalt in your furnace, you need to move the new item to your inventory.
Congratulations, you have made smooth basalt in Minecraft!
How to get Smooth Basalt in Survival Mode
In Minecraft, you can add smooth basalt to your inventory in Survival mode by finding smooth basalt in a geode in your world and then gathering it. So, let’s get started!
1. Find a Geode
First, you need to find a geode in your Minecraft world. Geodes are found underground in the Overworld, sometimes at the end of an underground cave system. Other times, you will have to mine to find one.
A geode is made of 3 layers – the outer layer is smooth basalt, the second layer is calcite, and the inner layer is blocks of amethyst and budding amethyst (with different growth stages of amethyst).
2. Hold a Pickaxe
To mine smooth basalt, you need to dig up the smooth basalt with a pickaxe. These are the pickaxes you can choose from.

How to make a Iron Pickaxe
How to make a Stone Pickaxe
How to make a Wooden Pickaxe
How to make a Netherite Pickaxe
If you try to dig up the smooth basalt with your hand or other tool (that is not a pickaxe), the small block of smooth basalt will not appear. And you will not be able to add the smooth basalt to your inventory.
In this example, we are going to use an iron pickaxe to dig up the smooth basalt.
3. Mine the Smooth Basalt
Find the smooth basalt layer in the geode and mine the smooth basalt with a pickaxe.
The game control to break the smooth basalt depends on the version of Minecraft:
For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the smooth basalt.
For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the smooth basalt.
For Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
For PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the smooth basalt.
For Education Edition, left click and hold on the smooth basalt.
You will need to continue to dig until the block breaks and a smaller block of smooth basalt finally appears. The block of smooth basalt will float on the ground.
4. Pick up the Smooth Basalt
Make sure you pick up the smooth basalt before it disappears.
Once you pick up the smooth basalt, it will appear in your hotbar.
Smooth basalt is a useful item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
