This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft string with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

How to gather String in Survival Mode
You can add string to your inventory in Survival mode by killing a spider. So let’s get started!
1. Find a Spider
You first need to find a spider. You can find spiders in most Overworld biomes in light levels of 7 or less. Spiders will spawn in the dark, usually at night.
2. Attack and Kill a Spider
Once you find a spider, you need to attack it. When you attack the spider, it will turn pink as it takes damage.
Continue to chase and attack the spider. The spider will disappear when it is killed.
When the spider is killed, it will drop one of the following items: string or spider eye. There isn’t a 100% chance that the spider will drop string when it dies. If it doesn’t drop one, find another spider and try again.
3. Pick up the String
Make sure you pick up the dropped items before they disappear.
These are useful items and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
