It’s astonishing to think that the first Pokemon games, Red and Green, were only released in Japan back in 1996. In just five years, the franchise became a huge success, both as a video game and a broader media franchise. Within a decade, Pokemon had become a global phenomenon.

Today, the cultural impact of Pokemon is undeniable. With its adorable creatures and exciting battles, it has captivated generations of kids and will likely continue to do so for years to come. As a big fan of both Pokemon and Minecraft, I’m thrilled to see the two worlds come together.

This list features a collection of free-to-download Pokemon Trainer skins, mostly based on characters from various games in the franchise.

1. Ash Ketchum (Galar)

The red hat and vest of this skin are truly iconic and instantly recognizable to any Pokemon fan. In fact, just a glance at this skin is enough to make you want to grab your gaming device, whether it’s a Switch, DS, Gameboy, or anything else, and jump back into the world of Pokemon with that classic twinkle of the Pokemon Company logo.

2. Misty (Anime Version)

Ash is considered to be at the top according to most metrics, but there is no doubt that Misty is right up there with him. Her infectious positivity, distinctive attire, and water-themed persona have made her one of the most well-known figures in anime and gaming history.

3. Marnie (Sword & Shield)

Ash and Misty are considered classic examples of Pokémon trainers, but it’s time to introduce some fresh faces. Marnie is a great place to start, having made her debut in Sword and Shield, which brought the Pokémon franchise into the modern era with the Nintendo Switch. Marnie, who is a popular idol rival, played no small part in this update.

4. Serena (X & Y)

Those who began their Pokémon adventures with X and Y are likely to favor Serena, and it’s easy to understand why. Her character design is excellent, and with a fantastic custom skin created by PikaOlivia, it’s hard not to be biased towards her.

5. Dawn (Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl)

When it comes to choosing a favorite Pokémon trainer, Dawn is an obvious choice for fans of both the games and anime. Even if you’re not particularly attached to the Diamond/Pearl generation, it’s hard to deny that Dawn stands out along with the entire Sinnoh region. Additionally, the fact that skin creator euganah has perfectly captured Dawn’s design makes her an even more compelling choice.

6. Lucas (Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl)

Lucas, the male equivalent of Dawn in the D/P/Pt & BDSP generation, is an ideal choice for Minecraft players looking to play as a Pokémon trainer. Although his appearance is not as eye-catching as some other characters, such as Marnie or Brock, his red cap and blue jacket make him instantly recognizable as a Pokémon trainer.

7. Brendan (Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

I absolutely love the RSE games from Gen 3, from start to finish. There are too many reasons to count (although it all begins with the beloved Mudkip), but one major factor is the design of the trainers.

8. May (Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

In terms of recognizable Pokémon trainers, May easily outshines her male counterpart. It’s not difficult to understand why – she’s adorable, has a unique and playful hairstyle, and was a prominent character in the anime. Even her Minecraft skin looks fantastic, as it perfectly captures the essential elements of her design.

9. Ethan (HeartGold & SoulSilver)

The Ethan skin draws inspiration from the design of HeartGold/SoulSilver games, and adeptly embodies the role of a Pokémon trainer in every aspect. From the backwards hat to the backpack slung over the shoulder and the mid-shin trainer pants, this skin exudes the essence of a “Pokémon protagonist.” This energy is precisely what I aspire to convey on my upcoming Minecraft server.

10. Brock (Anime Version)

Encountering the first gym trainer in the initial Pokémon game was an unforgettable experience, particularly when it came to Brock. Brock made a profound impression, and for good reason. With his amiable demeanor and distinctive narrow eyes, Brock has become one of the most cherished and identifiable personalities in the Pokémon realm.

11. Pokémon Trainer Red (Smash)

Although initially introduced in the original Pokémon manga series, this particular trainer’s design gained widespread recognition upon their inclusion in the Smash universe, ultimately garnering a dedicated fan base. This skin deserves recognition for its precise portrayal of the quintessential Pokémon trainer appearance. Remarkably, the model achieves this without the use of intricate layering or texturing to create a 3D effect.

12. Selene (Sun & Moon)

The Pokémon franchise experienced a major shift with Sun and Moon, with both character and world design taking on a completely new direction. This fresh approach was widely welcomed, and breathed new life into the series. One of the game’s main characters, Selene (also known as Moon), dons a delightful tropical outfit meticulously crafted by skin designer Sylvememer.

13. Elio (Sun & Moon)

Elio, Selene’s spirited counterpart, looks incredibly impressive in this coordinated skin crafted by Sylvememer. I’m particularly fond of how this skin captures the animated look with its oversized eyes and absence of distinct facial features. When it comes to Minecraft skins, some of my personal favorites employ exaggerated anime styles like this design. Such skins typically feature only the character’s eyes and boast a plumper, more rounded physique.

14. Hilbert (Black & White)

I admit it: I find the name Hilbert amusing. But, it’s all in good fun! Plus, this skin is fantastic. Similar to numerous other trainer skins, this Gen 5 skin effectively captures the nostalgic and inviting aura of a Pokémon trainer.

15. Hilda (Black & White)

I must say, Hilbert and Hilda are undoubtedly top-tier names. There’s just no denying it. When compared to Lucas and Dawn, Hilbert and Hilda come out on top without question. Additionally, Hilda’s design exudes the pinnacle of the female Pokémon game protagonist.
