If you look at a desert temple structure, you will be able to notice patterns built onto the pillars. In the newer versions of the game, these pillars are made of terracotta blocks. But if you take a look at a desert temple in the older versions of the game, you will be able to see that these actually used to be wool blocks. The game generated this pattern using either blue or orange wool. Wool Temples Mod (1.21.4, 1.20.1) bring this back into the newer versions of the game.
